Sundial Grocers © 2010

The Johnnygreenseed project officially launched on May 1, 2010.

The project was started exactly ten years ago on May 1, 2000 and is now prepared to complete its mission of bringing all 9 concepts to life and becoming financially self sustaining. Once this mission has been completed Johnnygreenseed will close it’s doors and allow each of these employee owned companies to operate 100% on their own.

We have located the property we are hoping will become our first store. It is over 5 acres in downtown Birmingham and offers the opportunity to create a organic garden we can use to teach the local community how to become green entrepreneurs. We are planning to acquire several tractors and various equipment we can loan out for neighborhoods who wish to earn extra income by learning to grow organic goods for Sundial grocers.

It will become a teaching center for helping local communities earn income by growing organic products for this Sundial grocer location. It is attached to the rail system and offers the perfect opportunity to showcase what we plan to do in 56 locations nationwide.

The property fits our exact criteria of being located in a depressed area, rail connected, easy freeway access and enough land to allow for a teaching center as well as extensive parking.

Sundial grocers is designed to be a  100% employee owned co-op. The managing structure will be similar to Rainbow grocers in San Francisco. The Sundial grocer is first and foremost a farmers market offering space at cost to the states local farmers with a priority to organic farmers.

Sundial grocers will began our delivery service in   Mid July, 2010 servicing the metro Birmingham area including, south side, Mountain Brook, Hoover, Vestavia and Greystone. We will began selling fresh local organic produce and some local prepared meals with fresh made pasta coming in the fall. Please check back for our new site and how you can get on our delivery route. If you would like to be on our mailing list please send us a message.

We do want to add that we have decided to go ahead and began the farming operations for our first store in Alabama. We are planting three acres of farmland to see how much a mini farmer can produce. Our objective is to peak the interest of those wishing to create a mini farm business to supply goods to the sundial grocers in this state and all others. We are also adding a local delivery service to sell fresh Gulf seafood that has never been frozen which will be a major feature of our first store. Our number one goal is to support the local organic farmer and fisherman before they no longer exist.

These are exciting times as we officially began as a simple seed and grow to hopefully challenge the entire way foods are grown, sold and consumed in this country.

Your support is greatly appreciated.
